Novells next release of OpenSuse 11.2 “Fitchte” is all set to release this November, with latest linux kernel and the support for the latest hardwares in the market.

Fitchte Features

  • 2.6.31 Linux Kernel

Released this September, this version of linux kernel provides new features compared to its ancestors. Some of the notable features are – Support for USB 3, CUSE & OSS proxy, IEEE 802.15.2. It also has updated its memory management in order to deliver best performance even with considerably low memory availability.

  • Updated File System

Fitchte is packed with EXT4 filesystem. This latest file system is designed for optimal performance. One of the most important feature is that the maximum size of a single file has been increased to 2 TeraByte. This backward compatible filesystem also provides online defragmentation and multi block allocation. EXT4 supports a technique called delay allocation. With this technique, the block allocation is kept on hold until the data is actually written in the disk. Though it was introduced to increase the performance and avoid fragmentation problems, this has caused some data loss problem, especially when the system crashes before writing a data block.

  • Support for the latest softwares.

Fitchte has a collection of rich built in softwares such as Open Office 3.1 and Firefox 3.5. The distro also features complete toolkits for linux development. The list of packages seemed to be the same as that of OpenSuse 11.1( but, the updated versions).

  • KDE 4.3

Codenamed “Caizen” the latest KDE boasts to have fixed 10000 bugs !!! and have implemented 2000 features which were requested by the community. Any normal computer user, will find that the feature and effects of Windows are nothing when compared to this distro.

  • GNOME 2.28

Although the performance of its previous release( Opensuse 11.1 with GNOME 2.24) was not up to the mark and contained lot of bugs, we can hope that Fitchte will cover overcome them, with this latest GNOME 2.28.


With all these new improvements, Fitchte is the most awaited linux distribution this season. Lets wait to find out if it was really worth the wait…
