DOS applications that are designed for 16 bit architecture mostly fail to run on the latest version of Windows. And in Linux, no chance you can get them executed in the terminal. So to get these 16bit applications work on you current operating system, you got to use an emulator.

DOS Box is one such emulator,an open source which will work on any of the latest versions of Windows and on Linux, Mac & Solaris. DOS Box serves as the heart of the emulation, where you need a separate front-end for display. The good part is that the front-ends are available for free in DOS Box website.

Here is the list of front-ends available for DOS Box:

  1. Download & Install DOS Box from here.
  2. Open the DOS Box icon to get started.
  3. The DOS prompt flashed up with drive letter “Z:”
  4. Mount the drive in which the game is present. Incase they are present in “D:games” you can assign that sub-folder as a drive (Eg. Drive J) with the command “MOUNT J: D:games”
  5. Type “J:” and press Enter

I have some Memories to Share with You.. when I was in Primary School.. I didn’t have a Comp to Play Games and Stuff.. I and My friend used to Visit Cyber Cafe every Now and Then…. and used to play so many DOS games initially..

it was fun playing “dave” .. as it was very challenging… and i used to struggle.. Jumping on fire.. pressing the ALT key and shooting the spiders.. I and my friend used to share the keyboard and one used to move forward and the other one used to shoot…

and also, that jet Pack… most importantly.. i loved the Tune.. wen the dave jumped.. and collecting the prize(cup) to enter through doors.. the diamond every where! and a unique sound while crossing from level n to level n+1…. under the bricks!

and talking about Prince of Persia.. it’s such a wonderful game…. The shift key to open up the sword and fight.. lol… and pressing the forward arrow hardly and pressing the spacebar to jump long distances.. after few days, we learnt that we could use Cheat codes to kill enemies… i guess its SHIFT+K to kill the enemy!

we used to jump from 1 level to other using cheat sheets.. lol… cheat sheet spoiled the game!

Wow thats great experience dude. And its true cheat codes spoil the interest of games. I never had a computer too until 4th grade. Thinking my studies will get hurt ,my dad kept his computer in his company, i used to go there every saturday to play these DOS games :D . And lot more adventures when I was young. I think i was in 5th grade, my dad’s PC dint power up. So i changed the SMPS value from 220 volt to 110 volt and guess wat SMPS fuse bursted :D

Thanks Dude, BTW do have any idea about how to resolve the Paypal problem ? Lot of my money are now getting reversed :(

  10. February 7, 2010 at 6:49 pm #

Same issue here. The quickest way to resolve this is perhaps to ask the payee to make the transfer as “Trasanction” and NOT as “Paypal Personal Payment”.

NOTE: However, Paypal deducts a fee in this process.
