With the release of Firefox 3.6, Inspite of the many changes and additions like Personas, the very first problem I faced was “when clicking on the Open in new Tab” its opens the page next to the current tab. Previously it used to open the new tabs next to the last tab. Though for many people this would be an advantage, being a firefox user for the past 4 years or so, I really find it difficult, and I hope many are facing this problem. So the following will guide you on how to disable the feature and make the news tabs in firefox open in the last.
How to Open Firefox New Tabs next to the last tab
- Open Firefox
- Enter “about:config” in the URL and press Enter
- This will invoke a warning message ” as shown below, Click on the “I’ll be careful, I promise ” button to open the setting page.
- Locate the Filter text box and enter “browser.tabs.insertRelatedAfterCurrent”
- This will show the key and its value below (which will be enabled)
- Double Click on the option to Disable it.
- Restart Firefox
This is it, with these simple steps you can make Firefox open the new tabs in the last just like the older versions.

At first 1 minute, I confused with my new firefox.
And after I realized about the new changes (about new tab) I try to set this damn change to my like.
But I found nothing on option – tabs.
So, I started to get angry and begin cursing firefox, for changing fundamental things like this without any other option for the users (I know it’s free).
Then I googling “firefox open new tab to last tab”, and voila I found your page.
Thanks for the solution, and I appreciate your very clear explanations. You’re great.

Thanks a lot! it really helped me! its better to me when a new tab is opened next to the last
The next to the current tab open functionality is best and it reduce the scrolling time in tabs, so, what is the benefit of this old tab facility?
Yup the feature is good in some cases, but consider the following situation, there are 5 links in a page which I load in new tabs, that case clicking on one tab takes me to the new one, then I should again roll back to the parent tab to open links again.
And the main reason, why people prefer this is that they have got used to this
and they don't want to follow the new system.

Seriously you are a lifesaver! I hated searching for which tabs I wanted to read first. WOW! What a quick fix. Love it!
Thanks!!! I was so frustrated with those tabs before you saved my life!
Nice trick.thanks for sharing..
This is insane.
I was forced to install TabMix Plus in sacrifice of stability everytime I configured a new Firefox installation since 4 years ago, and that is just for the feature! And now everybody seems to be complaining about that! I even found that Ubuntu had that option disabled by default!
I guess an option to choose how it works is badly needed!
