Voice Chat in Linux

Problem:

Many famous Instant Messengers like Google Talk and Yahoo Messenger fail to work in Linux. Also popular IMs designed for Linux like Pidgin and Kopete don’t have voice call features.

Solution:

Skype has launched a beta version of its Messenger for linux. The good news is that all features that were in the Windows version of Skype are present in the linux version too and they work like a charm. So for those who want voice call in Linux, use the beta version of Skype for linux.

@Rajesh: I have two hard disk, one runs Windows XP 64bit and the other hard disk has OpenSuse 12 (GNOME). I mostly run on linux, but in case of trying any windows software, will switch to the other hard disk.

@Pavan: Thats right Pavan, Skype is really helpful.

@Rajesh: I suggest you can go for OpenSuse 12. Other distros does not support most of the latest hardware. If you are a newbie, Im sure you wil find OpenSuse very useful. Choose GNOME during installation. Because its more stable.

I’ve been using Skype on Ubuntu for a while. I’ve had some problems with it:

    1. No snapshot feature – I have to take a full screenshot, which is a pain in the neck. The Windows version does have a screenshot function in Skype which works really well.

    2. If I maximize the Skype window, sometimes I get booted out.

    3. Upgrading to the latest Skype resulted in really crappy call performance, so I had to backgrade.

    4. The audio levels don’t work quite right.

Overall, Skype on Linux is usable, but the Windows version is much more robust (it kills me to say that).
