Ever wondered how data recovery softwares could perform the magic of retrieving deleted files from hard disk. Well, here is the brief explanation of its working.

Data are stored in different clusters of a hard disk. Each cluster has a pile of data which mostly belongs to the same file. When a file is deleted using Shift+Del or any Erasing softwares such as CCleaner or Privacy Eraser Pro, the data in the clusters are not completely cleared. Instead the first letter of the file name is replaced with any symbol (mostly $) and the operating system marks those clusters associated with that file as free space.

Any file that is present in the free space cluster will be ignored by the operating system and so it is not displayed to the end user. These free spaces are later utilized for storing some other file.

Now when we run a data recovery software, it scans for each cluster including those ones which are marked as “free spaces”. Finally after the scanning process, it groups the data in the clusters and presents to the user as files. The user can retrieve the complete file or a part of the file, depending on whether that “free cluster” was used or not by some other file.

Frequently Asked Questions about Data Recovery

1. What is the difference between deleting a file to recycle bin and confirmed deleting it using Shift+Del?

The first method does not logically delete the file, you would have seen a hidden folder called “recycled” in every disk drive. The first method simple moves the file from its original location and puts it into the hidden recycle folder. Whereas the second method doesn’t move the file, it only assigns the space used by the file as “free space“.

2. Is it possible to retrieve files deleted by these two methods?

Yes files deleted from both the ways are retrievable. File deleted by the Method 1 can be retrieved fully without any loss of data. It can be done by the operating system itself. Whereas the file deleted by Method 2 does not guarantee 100% recovery. Operating system doesn’t provide any built in feature to retrieve it, but it can be achieved through third party softwares.

3. How can I completely delete a file, giving no chance for data recovery softwares to retrieve it?

Operating systems do not provide any such tools for this feature, however this can be achieved using third party softwares. These softwares implement methods like DOD for complete file deletion, by which guarantees that data can never be retrieved.

4. Is it possible to retrieve data even after disk format?

Yes there are chances for the file to be retrieved after a disk format. Infact if you are lucky, the complete partition can be recovered. You would have noticed an option during disk format called “Quick format”. If this disk is formatted using this way, then it is possible to recover data.
